Bruce, if you are Pak Made Bebat as Bali Echo says: I think it unforgivable that you would be so horrible to Isabella really because of some old dagang feud with her late husband. It can't be true.
If it is I think you are un-fit to be involved in the art world at all: if you bury someone whose show you have just curated in your gallery.
I think itunethical for you as a writer not to sign such a personally vindictive review with your own name--considering the vested interests involved i.e.:
- your house's not being featured
- feud with Yani over antiques
- your inventing/surmizing, widely, that Isabella, as an art photographer, is envious of Luca???
Any respect I had for you as a serious historian/writer has evaporated.
Tell me its not true or ........... avoid me.
The Poodle.
Made

Dear Made
To begin with we would all like to wish you a Happy New Year and send thanks for your kind wishes for the same. We have been having a great time in the Caribbean though we have been out of contact in Cuba where the internet connections are nil.
I am quite taken back by both the tone, accusations and threats contained in your email. I have no idea what you are talking about and here on these glorious beaches. Bali's petty rivalries seem so far away and trivial.
With best regards,
B

People at the Bali Echo say you are I. Made Bebat. Is it true? We want to know. That's all.

To Made Wijaya
Dear sir,
My name is Andre Syahreza. I am the former editor of Bali Echo. My last issue at Bali Echo contain your book review: Bali At Home.
About a week ago, Bruce Carpenter send me a short notes of your letter to him. I was surprised. I would like to inform you that I am the person who handled stories as I am the one who knows name and date spesifically. I am so sorry to say it is NOT RIGHT to mention Bruce as Made Bebat. I don't have any idea where the information come from, but I can make sure that it was totally a DISINFORMATION. Please don't get me wrong of this. I just try to keep my deal to some of writer who won't have their name on the paper.
Thanks alot, I appreciate your attention.
Regards,
Andre Syahreza

Huge apologies, for even doubting. (Someone is copying your prose style it seems). Mr. Syahreza's e-mail re-affirms my impression of the Bali Echo's impeceable journalistic standards.

Dear Mr. Syahreza,
Re: "NOT RIGHT" (your e-mail of 12 January 2001)
It is NOT RIGHT for you to publish totally negative reviews without giving the reviewer's name (obviously someone very knowledgeable about publications on Bali, and my work, and Ganesha gallery shows). Correct attribution of a review is polite, ethical and allows the reader to judge wether the reviewer is entitled (through experience) to make such claims, or just some hot-head. Equiries via your Indonesian colleagues at Bali Echo have now turned turned up Bruce's name (I was suprised).
May I ask who Mr. Made Bebat is and why the Bali Echo, dedicated to impartial promotion of tourism and the arts, and Balinese culture, would suddenly bother publishing a vindinctive full page review, full of spitefullness and personal attacks, on a book well received and reviewed across the world (five stars in amazon.com). Its some inter-BulŽ rivalvy, I suspect.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion--artists and writers need an occasional bashing-but it should be fair. Above ground. Honest and open.
Yours sincerely,
Made Wijaya

Dear sir,
I am so sorry to what happened to us, my first contact to you is a minor one. Hopefully it would change in some other next time.
I believe your publication is a high feature one, but I have my job to do > for the magazine. We were just having a different point of view. Otherwise, it's good to have critics for reflection.
Once again, many sorry.
Warm regards,
Andre Syahreza

Dear Andre, Thank you for your reply. To comment:
No, itÕs not "a different point of view". ItÕs about professional publishing ethics. Printing the reviewerÕs name is decent and honest. ( And prevents unscrupulous people using the magazines as forums for airing personal vendettas ).
Yes "critics for reflection" is good. That is not the issue here. Other: The publication is not mine but Abbeville Press ( N.Y.Õs finest - who are not pleased, understandably ).
As are other writers, photographers and publishers in the region when they witness this sort of foul play.
Thank you for your apology but it should be directed at Isabella and Abbeville.
Yours, Made

Thank you darling for the crusade you have embarqued into also in my name. I feel protected for a change! One thing that should be pointed out to this Mr Andre is that there is a difference between"critic reflection"and slandering a project that has served Indonesia in a moment of cryses(refer to the support of the Indonesian Consulate in NY) with unthruth statements about the quality and the motivations of the people involved and wrong information about my work ("famous for her bw photos of temples under the rain"???!!/out of focus ect.). This is all I have to add.Let'sget together soon.
Love
Isabella

An apology! What are you talking about here, man? As the new editor of Bali Echo, I'm just kind enough to tell you to stop sending us your polemical emails with the former editor. If you still think that my email is not good enough, well up to you, matey! Your demand for an apology from Bali Echo, I think, is very unrealistic! Who do you think you are to dictate Bali Echo of what to publish or not! And how dare you include me as being responsible for what Bali Echo's previous editor did! If you can't handle criticism, even a really bad one, well, stop writing anything, then! Suhartospeak won't take you anywhere today! And a threat from a foreigner to a native is just bad karma. It may just return back fast and good like aspirin!
Mad new editor,
